Crimes Against Humanity (and Denim)

The late 90s through mid 2000s were a time of unprecedented crime against denim.  These crimes were largely perpetrated by Abercrombie & Fitch, who pleated, studded, distressed, and shrunk denim into the microscopic "skirts" you see below.

Somewhere around 2005, our nation realized that we could no longer accept these denim atrocities.  Particularly when paired with UGG boots.  Since coming to our collective senses, we have largely sworn off denim in skirt form.  But for spring 2014, our denim designers have brought back that endangered species, the denim skirt.  Is it too soon?

I believe that we as a nation have had sufficient time to heal.  That time has helped us realize that it is not the innocent use of denim in skirt form that we hate, no no... it is the use of shredded, bedazzled denim in the form of a tube top for the buns that we simply cannot abide.  Time has helped us see that the denim skirt has been an innocent victim in all this.

So I ask you: are we, my fellow Americans, ready to accept the denim skirt back into our lives and into our closets?

  2. Just thinking about those "skirts" with Ugg boots is making me cringe.

This is a denim skirt that I love...unfortunately, it's also a $600+ denim skirt, which is ridiculous.

    1. Cute and probably more versatile than that Current / Elliott one. Let's hope that the rest of America has not fully processed their denim trauma-- so it will go on sale :)

  3. I don't think I'm ready for denim skirts. I can't figure out the right top. It's the combination of formal and informal that's hard for me to think through.

    1. Now that you mention it I am kinda remembering this dilemma... with a button down or tee, the whole look can go a little schlumpy, but if you just wear a tank then it is so casual. Hmmm.

  4. I own a couple from APC from that period or sooner as APC just does them all the time and I am not sure when it works well because I do not wear them. Perhaps mine are shorter than the C/E version but I cannot figure out if the length helps me find more options of outfit.

    1. I am sure APC is not guilty of any of the aforementioned crimes against denim, even if they are a bit shorter!

  5. I'm not sure if I am ready to accept denim skirts back into my life. I could be persuaded. Hmm... But what to pair it with? Some silk blouse tucked in maybe.

    1. Yeah a silk top or a t-shirt that has some interest/detailing might be the ticket.
